Academic contests consist of multiple choice tests given separately to high school and elementary school contestants. Students take four tests of their choosing during a two-hour testing session. Seventh and eighth grade students who are enrolled in high school Latin classes must register for high school tests.
Prizes are awarded to the five highest scorers on each grade level. Entries which tie receive the same awards. High school and elementary school contestants who score highest in each category, regardless of grade level, receive medals.
Multiple-Choice Examinations that are part of Latin Olympics:
Vocabulary: Identifying the meaning of Latin words and phrases
Derivatives: Identifying the Latin roots of English words
Mythology: Identifying the characters and plots from Greek and Roman mythology
Reading Comprehension: In a multiple choice test, show that the meaning of Latin passages is understood.
Roman History & Culture: Highlighting facts about Roman history and culture
Grammar: Noting the grammatical forms in the Latin language
Pentathlon: Pentathlon includes questions on vocabulary, derivatives, mythology, grammar, and Roman history and culture.
N.B.:
The Pentathlon exam carries double the value of other academic contests when calculating sweepstakes winners. For high school students it is also twice as long.
